Low River Levels

The McKenzie, South Santiam, and Middle Fork Willamette are now flowing at much lower levels than previous weeks. The positive side of this factor is that fish are now holding in very predictable areas. They are more contained or concentrated making target areas very obvious. The negative, fish are being pounded on so hard as to make them skitish and spooky. Steelhead are abundant in the McKenzie, but with low and clear water, down-sizing your presentation is mandatory. The steelhead catch on most of these rivers is best just below the hatcheries and dams. With the Willamette flowing below the 10 foot level, chasing steelhead on the "Town Run" through Eugene could be a good call right now. I'm hearing many complaints about the "poor bite" from Springer fishermen. We still have lower than normal water temperatures for this time of year, probably related to the above average snowpack. This could be a related, if the determining factor in this weak bite. Anglers putting in the time are finding fish. We landed 5 Springers yesterday on the McKenzie.
