Winter Steelhead Fishing Report - (read more)

Alas-  A quick Winter Steelhead Update -   Winter Steelhead have shown up in most of the rivers along the Oregon coast.  Decent numbers have been caught in many of our rivers, particularly when favorable conditions prevail.  This catch rate is in stark contrast to the almost universally poor 2007 Fall Chinook run. To answer the question of whether to watch the Superbowl on Sunday or go fishing, well.......................... unless you're a plunker, the option to kick it with some hot wings and a cold one may well be your best choice.  Today's river level readings has the Siuslaw at 15 feet, dropping only to 12 by Monday.  The Siletz is at 9, dropping to 7 by Monday.  To the south,  the S.F. Coquille at Powers reads 6 feet today and predicted rain has it rising to 7 for Superbowl Sunday.  Even the Elk is running a tad high at 6.2 today.  It's a crap shoot there since rain, or lack thereof, could swing it either way.  The rivers that have received some of the best ink for steelhead this season include the Chetco, the Millicoma, the Coquille system, the Siletz and even the Siuslaw.  The best news is that the Umpqua Mainstem is plunkable, hovering right around15 feet.  Sorry to have been so remiss this winter in terms of fishing reports.  I've been on the road and generally with only occassional computer access.
