Biters Providing Great Early Season Action on the McKenzie River

Just before the Memorial Day Weekend, I took an opportunity to slip in a quick evening scouting trip on the McKenzie River. To my joy and amazement, my efforts were generouly rewarded. Forty minutes into the trip I tied into a monster steelhead 37 inches long that tested both skill and equipment. When it finally came to the net, I felt like I was lifting a Fall Salmon, not a Summer Steelhead. By the end of the trip, I had hooked 3 additional Springers, two which made it to the net. Both of the salmon landed were of hatchery origin. It was clear that a succulent Memorial Day BBQ was destined.
