Bluebird weather and a sudden rise in river temperatures have combined to make for some fun recent fishing. After a very cold February that saw water temperatures in the low 40s, sunny weather in early March has brought water temperatures up into the low 50s and the bite has corresponded nicely. While I don't think we we have huge numbers of late arrivals, the fish that are in the systems are biting aggressively to say the least. They are literally on the attack. We had one fish last week miss a plug twice, actually knocking it out of the water, to finally get hooked on his third attempt. On a different river, a friend of mine caught the same fish 3 times in a 30 minute period! On the third catch, the same fish had moved to an entirely different hold. I'm just back from running some trips down south on the Elk, Sixes and the Coquille. On the last day we had some pretty fair action going 5 for 8 on a short day trip. The air temperature reached into the upper 60s and I actually had to remove my shirt just to cool down. It was quite a contrast with day after day of hail storms in February. Warm and sunny conditions are forecast for this weekend. With rivers on the low and clear side, it could be a great opportunity to swing some flies. On many of our coastal streams, we only have another 2 weeks of winter steelhead fishing, so get out there and do it!
