Springers are now adding to the mix of wonderful wild Steelhead on the North Umpqua

We have entered the final stretch for winter steelhead fishing on most of our coastal streams. A few select rivers offer prolonged opportunity for some continued steelhead fishing beyond the general March 31st cutoff. Numerous rivers and sections of some rivers remain open to steelhead fishing year-round. The Rogue, the Umpqua, and the Siletz fall into this category. The Whitaker Run on the Siuslaw remains open through April 15, while the South Fork of the Coquille stays open through April 30. Winter steelhead fishing on the Siuslaw however, has slowed considerably. The North Umpqua still remains a shining star this season for steelhead. On Saturday's trip we landed 3 beautiful chrome-bright natives still on their way upriver. We also lost presumably a Spring Chinook which are gradually becoming part of the catch with increasing frequency. The fish we missed was laying in a deeper salmon run when it took a wrapped K-16 Kwikfish behind a large diver. Effort for Umpqua Springers will increase dramatically through April and May. To the far south, the very few people fishing the Sixes river for steelhead this past week did quite well. Meanwhile, here locally, more anglers each day are now out matching the March Brown hatch on the McKenzie and finding sporadic action for native Redsides and Cutthroat.
