For most of our coastal rivers, we are now in waning days of winter steelheading which will close on March 31st. Several systems will stay open however and continue to produce winter steelhead well into April. The Rogue, the Umpqua and the Siletz are but 3 of these systems that provide some great late-winter and early-spring opportunities for both hatchery and wild steelhead. We ran up to the Siletz last Saturday and found the river was still producing fish as suspected. We witnessed good action in the Moonshine Park area and even saw fish rolling and jumping in numerous spots. We ended up with a real mixed bag. Natives, kelts, fresh hatchery steelhead and aggressive Cutts. A quick drift Sunday afternoon on the lower McKenzie produced some nice native Redsides up to 16 inches. Surprisingly enough, all the action came on dry flies while the nymphs went ignored. A few March Browns were fluttering around enough to get the fish looking upwards. April can be a wonderful month to target the McKenzie's feisty native Rainbows on the fly.
