Coquille - South Fork

Coquille River (Lower) | Siletz River | Siuslaw River | Spring Chinook | Winter Steelhead
In early through mid-February I ran some trips on the Coquille. We had great results targeting feisty winter chromeballs with multifish hook-ups on every outing. Side-drifting is the popular method in Powers country, though some days the plugs way out-performed the drifted eggs. The universal complaint I kept hearing was about too many quick bites resulting in lost fish. We lost our share of fish on plugs as well so I can only attribute that to the low water temperatures making for tentative biters. It was all good fun. After a full week of low river levels, today's rain is already bringing many systems back up. During the low water a number of systems fished very good in the lower stretches. I heard of great reports on the Siuslaw, and the Siletz in addition to the Coquille. Late february and March can bring in some monster natives for folks hoping to hook into a 20lb plus fish. Hard to believe, but I'm already hearing about folks setting up for Springer action on the lower Willamette. |
