CHRISTMAS GREETINGS
Submitted by John Gross on 20 December 2005 - 4:51am.
Alsea River | Coquille River (South Fork) | Elk River | Fall Chinook | McKenzie River | Siletz River | Sixes River | Umpqua River (Mainstream) | Winter Steelhead
I'm finally back home on the McKenzie after a month down in Port Orford fishing the Elk & Sixes Rivers. We were hooking fish, even on my last day when rivers were ridiculously low and clear. Folks fishing low on Sixes have been witnessing the absolute blood-bath the salmon are taking from seals and sea lions. The fish were trapped in the lowest holes between the tides and extremely vulnerable to predation. This suggests that there remains a viable push of fresh fish still to come. Yesterday, the south coast was hammered by rain and the Elk spiked up to 9 feet. It's at six feet today and dropping swiftly. If the rains hold off a bit, there could be some dynamite fishing over the next few days. I'm off for the Christmas holiday, so you guys have a blast down there! I'll be back on the water in January looking forward to winter steelhead on the Elk, Sixes, Umpqua, Coquille, Alsea and Siletz just to name a few outstanding fisheries. HAPPY HOLIDAYS, JOHN |
