My Summer Steelhead & Spring Chinook season has begun. Though our numbers are not where they were last year at this time, with some patience, a good attitude, and a touch of good mojo, fish can be found. Yesterday we coaxed a couple Spingers into biting. The first and largest, ran about 18 pounds. But honestly, it was the summer steelhead we landed that stole the show. It was about an 8 lb chromer that thrilled us with multiple jumps and a nice tailwalk. As of May 22nd, ODFW reports almost 15,000 Springers and about 4,000 Summer Steelhead over Willamette Falls headed our way. These numbers contrast with about 24,000 Springers and almost 6,000 Summers over the Falls as of the same day last year. The next few weeks should indicate if this year's numbers will match or exceed that of previous years' counts.
