Our current forecast shows most of our mid-sized rivers and smaller coastal streams as fishable now or certainly by mid week. The Siuslaw River is projected to be at 7.5 feet by Wednesday and the Siletz River at 6.2 feet by Tuesday. This should put the upper stretches of both these rivers at very fishable and boatable levels by midweek, if not before. To the south, the Coquille and the Elk & Sixes Rivers are at excellent levels today. On a more sad note, I have received word that Steelheaders West, our local fishing shop that has been diligently serving the Eugene/Springfield area for quite a few years now, will be closing it's doors in the near future. In a relatively short time span, Mark Seghetti built this small enterprise up to become a local landmark for the serious salmon and steelhead fishermen and neophytes alike. In addition to providing an excellent array of tackle and quality bait, he specialized in sharing and dispursing important information on rigging, techniques, and "hot spots." We will sorely miss the presonalized service, the great enthusiasm, the ever-present smiles, and the stories that emanated from Mark & the shop. I'm told there will be the opportunity to take advantage of savings during inventory clearance at the end of this month. My understanding is Mark will continue to provide quality bait distribution and sales through existing accounts in the greater Eugene-Springfield area. He will also continue in his online service, The Weely Hook, which many of you already read. Mark, we will see you on the river, thanks for a job well done!
