Wednesday produced a fun mixed bag of fishing without a lot of other boats and fishermen to contend with. By starting early, we were able to fish our way down river at a leisurely pace and put our time in at many of the prime spots without much competition. On several occassions we did have to switch gears in order to chase totally uncooperative fish down the runs and rapids. When fishing summer steelhead on light gear, you occasionally hook the incidental salmon. As these boys often dictate the fight, patience and skill are mandatory to meet with success. My guest Bill ended up landing 2 beautiful, large adult steelhead. To both our disappoint, Bill lost a short battle with another dandy that would have finished off his steelhead "hat trick". That fish would have been Bill's first steelhead ever taken on a fly. On the brighter side, he did go 3 for 4 on strong salmon which were released and certainly helped to make for a very full day of fishing.
