In the coming weeks we will be welcoming the arrival of Summer Steelhead and Spring Chinook in our southern Willamette Valley Rivers. With the closing of the Lower Willamette River to Spring Chinook retention we should see better escapement of Springers into the local rivers on which I provide guided trips. These include the South Santiam, the Middle Fork Willamette and the renowned McKenzie. Recent warmer water temperatures at the Willamette Falls Fish Passage near Oregon City, had Salmon moving at a rate of 400 fish per day. As temperatures stabilize in the upper fifties, these migration numbers should continue to increase and build an improved fishing season for us relative to 2008. Last season's steelhead fishing was very good. At present, we will be allowed to target and retain up to 2 fin-clipped salmon which is very exciting news. If projected numbers do not materialize, this could change, but for now, we are optimistic. Folks who opt to keep steelhead, are actully allowed to keep three of the feisty specimens as an alternative to salmon. One way or another, there will be some quality fish to be had. I like to run combo trips where we chase after both species. The trout fishing option provides great family fun on the McKenzie River during the summer months when thousands of supplemental trout are released into the river to help insure success. This fishery provides a wonderful opportunnity to introduce beginners to fly fishing.
