Hot Trout Action on the McKenzie

| | | |

With Spring Chinook Season winding down, we have been focusing on upriver trout action. I ran a trout trip last week on the upper McKenzie River and the action was superb. My guests were brand new to the fly rod, but their skeptical looks soon changed to smiles as they were into fish within minutes hitting the water. By trip's end they had landed an easy 40 fish, while losing an equal amount. Not too shabby for their first effort ever with the fly rod! Salmon and steelhead migration over Willamette Falls has all but slowed to a stop with river temperatures at 80 degrees in Oregon City. The final current tally shows a total of 36,000+ Spring Chinook and 18,000+ Steelhead for 2006. The weak Spring chinook count compares with other years in the 80s, 90s, and 100+K. In spite of the low count, we were fortunate in consistently finding Springer action through the season. Persistence and good attitude pays dividends.
