The local weather in the Willamette Valley this week has been rainy and cool. The trade-off of comfort for good fishing has been very much worthwhile. Sporadic hot bites have been reported throughout the week, with the morning bite way out-producing the afternoon and evening fishing. Lots of native Spring Chinook have been in the mix this week, to the chagrin of folks looking for a good barbeque fish. Today's river level measurement on the South Santiam at Waterloo is at an ideal 1700cfs. If Army Corps of Engineers holds the South Fork at that level for the next few days, that could be the "go to River." Steelhead hook-ups have really picked up this week in addition to the Springer fishing and we've been landing some pretty feisty chromeballs in the 8-10lb range. Drifted jigs and baits have been the ticket on these summer-runs. As of May 20th, extrapolated fish numbers over Willamette Falls have Spring Chinook hovering at about 20,000 and Summer Steelhead at around 5,000.
